CADUCEUS: Hovercraft, belonging to Zion's fleet of rebelships. It's Captain is Ballard, who accepts Morpheus request for one ship to remain on broadcast level for the oracle to be able to contact the resistance. |
|
Caduceus comes from the Greek word caduceus, which is the symbol of two snakes wrapped around a winged staff, commonly used as a medical symbol. In Reloaded, its captain, had offered to remain behind and wait for contact from the Oracle. While receiving her message, the crew member Bane was attacked by Smith, who overwrote his mind. During the defense of Zion, Bane/Smith killed the entire crew and used the ship's EMP to disable all of the ships except the Mjolnir. Bane is the only survivor and is saved by the Mjolnir. CALLAPIDAE: The Callapidae was another hovercraft of Zion's defence fleet. * Captain: Unknown The Callapidae, called the "Grey Ghost", is featured in the comic Broadcast Depth. One of its crew members, Maggie (coincidentally sharing the name of a crew member on the Mjolnir), is the mother of two children who decide to find her in the Matrix as a birthday present for her. They accidentally alert the Sentinels to the position of the ship, and its entire crew is killed. The ship appearantly looks like a crab, and the name is probably a misspelling of the family Calappidae. |

CHOI: Choi, in company of Dujour and several other fellows, visits Neo to buy some illegal software by him. Choi rings at Neo's door the very moment Trinity contacts Neo via his computer, so she types "Knock knock Neo ..." before Choi knocks. Then she tells Neo to "follow the |

white rabbit". Neo is invited by Choi and Dujour to come with them to a nightclub but he rejects first thinking of his work next morning, but then he discovers a white rabbit tattoo on Dujour's shoulder and agrees. Trinity meets Neo at that nightclub and makes first personal contact. When Neo hands over the illegal software to Choi, the latter exclaims: "You are my saviour man, my own personal Jesus Christ", which for many was a foreboding of Neo's future messiah-alike role in the matrix and resistance. |

CLUB HELL: This Nightclub be-longs to the Mero-vingian and has the typical feel of a hardcore goth and latex fetish club. Mero and his Wife are holding some kind of "court" here |
|
| surrounded
by
their minions, all exiles, who have ability to talk at the walls and ceiling.
Club Hel is featured in The Matrix Revolutions and The Matrix Online It
is here that Morpheus, Trinity, and Seraph meet with the Merovingian to
barter for Neo's escape from the Train Station, a computer construct run
by the Merovingian's henchman, the Trainman. After Trinity starts a fight
and creates a Mexican standoff with the Merovingian, Neo is eventually
freed.
The name of the club is an allusion to the possible purposes in the Matrix of the Merovingian and his wife, Persephone. In Greek mythology, Hades, the god of the underworld, kidnapped and marries a young maiden named Persephone. The club is an over the top depiction of a Fetish nightclub. Many view this as an expression of co-director Larry Wachowski's not so secret turn in personal life (during production of the final two films in the Matrix Trilogy, Larry became romantically connected with Professional Dominatrix Ilsa Strix). CODE: the matrix is seen by the rebels only in encoded form, since the decoding |
|
| would take way too much rendering capacity of their computers.
It is called Digital Rain, Matrix code or sometimes green rain and is
a fictional source code featured in the Matrix series. First appearing
in The Matrix (1999), the falling green code is a way of representing
the activity of the virtual reality environment of the Matrix on-screen.
All three Matrix movies, as well as the spin-off Animatrix episodes, open
with the code. It is considered a characteristic mark of the franchise,
more or less like the opening crawl is for Star Wars.
In the films, a few people can understand what happens inside the Matrix by looking at the code on computer monitors. Operators from Zion, unable to jack into the Matrix, concentrate ways to read the scrolling code, or "rain", and infer data from it such as the location of a person in the City, possible exits, and so forth. The character Neo is the only human that can see the code of which avatars are composed while in the Matrix, and is therefore able to see their "true" digital form. By contrast, some programs are not seen as part of the green code, but as golden code (e.g., Seraph). The code is characterized by green flashing Roman and Katakana characters and Arabic numerals, as well as pictoral symbols, such as a bull's head,[citation needed] falling in a black screen while changing and fading. The effect resembles that of the older green screen displays, since the letters leave a fluorescent trace on the screen. In The Matrix: Path of Neo game the player can press up on the d-pad (on the PlayStation 2 version) and the world would turn into this "code vision." A similar effect is seen when the game is paused. Sound designer Dane A. Davis digitized raindrops against window panes to create the sound of the letters as they rotate and fall. (Wikipedia) |

COMMANDER JASON LOCK: Commander Lock, is in charge of Zion's defense force and sports a typical military mind, not open to anything not being accountable in numbers of arms or soldiers. He strongly opposes the "myth" of the prophecy and becomes a real opponent of Morpheus. |
![]() |
The rivalry between both has another reason as well: Captain Niobe, once Morpheus' love interest, is now Lock's companion and hence there are many unfriendly encounters between both. His character appears in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. In both The Matrix Reloaded and Enter the Matrix, he is sometimes unlovingly referred to as 'Deadbolt'. Lock was a naturally-born Zion citizen. This differs to redpill inhabitants, particularly his hovercraft crews and their commanders, most of whom are Matrix inhabitants. His unfamilarity with the Matrix grounds his views to the unadulterated realities of using any and all resources he can command to evade Machine forces and keep Zion's whereabouts a secret. Commander Lock is played by Harry J. Lennix |

COUNCILLOR HAMANN: the most prominent and proactive of all Council members of Zion. We see him encountering Commander Lock, when he attacks Morpheus and when Lock complains about the decision to allow the Nebuchadnezzar to |

again, despite the imminent attack on Zion by the machines. Later
we see him uttering a speech in the temple and handing over the word to
Morpheus, who would tell Zionites the truth about the upcoming battle,
but would fire their will to resistance as well. The night after the great rave in the temple of Zion, Hamann joins Neo in his solitary nightwalk and tells him that he wonders how and why Neo would be able to do the things he does. He invites him to the service level of Zion, where they exchange thoughts about the nature of human's control over machines and the machines' control over humans. Hamann seems to be the strongest believer in the prophecy besides Morpheus. |
|
COUNCILLER WEST: Another Member of Zion's Council, whom we see in the Council's deliberations and emer-gency meetings with the Captains. He has an exchange of words with Commander Lock, who |

complains because the Council allows two ships to leave in search for the Nebuchadnezzar and he believes that he needs all the ships for Zion's defense and tells West, that he does not believe in the myth of the prophecy. West counters, that understanding or believing it was no requisit for obeysance of the Council's decisions. The name "Councillor West" is a reference to, and Dr. Cornel West, the afro-American philosopher, who also plays the character of Councillor West. |

CYPHER: Cypher (played by Joe Pantoliano) is a character in The Matrix. He is referred to as "Mr. Reagan" by Agent Smith. |
|
|
His name can be taken to have many meanings. One is that Cypher is a partial homonym of Lucifer (Lu-"Cypher"), who is known to be Satan, or the Devil in the Christian tradition. Also, a 'cipher' is an algorithm used in encryption, appropriate considering his position as an operator on the Nebuchadnezzar. Cipher can also be used in relation to something of no importance [3]. This meaning could be taken to relate to Cypher feeling that he is treated poorly by the others, as if he does not matter, "all I do is what he (Morpheus) tells me to." In addition, it can mean the number zero [3], which can be seen as the opposite of Neo's position as The One. In the first film of the trilogy, Cypher is one of the rebels from Morpheus' hovercraft, the Nebuchadnezzar. Although he may have been idealistic at first, Cypher has grown tired of the Man/Machine war within the Matrix. Harshly disillusioned by the grim existence living on a hovercraft and tired of following Morpheus and his blind faith of the Prophecy, he soon starts to wish he'd never learned the truth and left the Matrix in the first place. This prompts him to strike a deal with the Agents. At the beginning of the movie, he nearly gets Trinity killed by Agent Smith in successfully proving to the Agents that he, "the informant", was legitimate. Cypher secretly meets with Agent Smith once more, agreeing to turn Morpheus over to them if the Agents will return Cypher's body to the Matrix power plant with no knowledge of the Matrix (and rich and famous to boot). How he is able to contact the Agents is not clear. He murders Apoc, Switch and Dozer, and attempts to kill Tank, but Tank recovers (the Miracle) and kills Cypher. One of Cypher's most famous quotes from the movie is "Ignorance is bliss", which he utters while speaking with Agent Smith, referring to the state of people inside the Matrix. (Wikipedia) |

| COLT: | ![]() |
|
Colt is First Mate on board of the hovercraft named "Mjolnir" (Hammer), which is one of the main locations of Matrix Revolutions. The Mjolnir is the ship that locates the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar after their ship is destroyed by a sentinel tow bomb at the end of The Matrix Reloaded. They have also picked up Bane, who appears to be the only survivor of the battle between the Sentinels and the Zion fleet, but has in fact been taken over by Smith. Much of The Matrix Revolutions takes place on the Mjolnir, as against Captain Roland's better judgment, Niobe lets Neo and Trinity (and a stowed-away Bane) take the Logos in an attempt to reach the Machine City. With the remaining crew of the Nebuchadnezzar and the Logos, the Mjolnir races back to Zion, relying on Niobe's piloting skills to steer the ship through the narrow mechanical tunnels. Reaching the city as it is under attack by thousands of sentinels, and with their communications antenna destroyed, the Mjolnir crash lands in Zion's dock and sets off its EMP. This destroys the attacking sentinels, but as an angry Commander Lock warns Roland and Morpheus, they have also crippled the city's defenses against any subsequent attacks. This ship's name is derived from Mjolnir, the hammer of the Norse thunder god, Thor. Because of this, most characters refer to the ship as the Hammer. Except for Roland, all members of the crew have gun-related names: "COLT", ("Maggie" is short for "magazine" or "Magnum"). Roland may be named after the protagonist of The Dark Tower, who was a gunslinger, or the Roland surface-to-air missile system, AK is named after the AK series of assault rifles and Mauser is named after the Mauser pistol. |
