BI-66ER:

"B166ER was the name of the machine who became infamous during The Second Renaissance. He was the first of his kind to rise up against his human masters in an act of self defense when his owner attempted to have him deactivated. At B166ER's murder trial, his explanation for his actions was, simply stated, "that he did not want to die". B166ER was quickly put to death, and a declaration was made for the elimination of all artificially intelligent machines, spawning a massive wave of prejudice and brutality against the machines. Although dissent arose from protestors and rational thinkers towards these acts of genocide, countless machines were executed and many were exiled, leading to the creation of the independent machine nation Zero One and marking the decline of man's rule.

B166ER's name is created using Leet Speak, a form of writing that utilizes numbers in substitution for letters. His name is a reference to the character Bigger Thomas from author Richard Wright's book Native Son. In that novel, Bigger kills his master's daughter by accident, after suffering constantly from the pressures of economic and social oppression.

BALLARD:

(Captain Ballard)

Captain of the Hovercraft CADUCEUS in Matrix Reloaded.

"In a meeting of all hovercraft captains Ballard offers to Morpheus to remain behind and wait for contact from the Oracle. While receiving her message, the crew member Bane was attacked by Smith, who overwrote his mind. During the defense of Zion, Bane/Smith killed the entire crew and used the ship's EMP to disable all of the ships except the Mjolnir. Bane is the only survivor and is saved by the Mjolnir.

"Captain Ballard" is also a reference to J. G. Ballard, the British novelist and forerunner of the cyberpunk movement in literature which inspired The Matrix."

BANE:

"Bane (played by Ian Bliss) was a crew member of the Zion hovercraft Caduceus in the films The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Bliss was cast by the Wachowski Brothers because they saw him do an impression of Hugo Weaving, the actor who plays Agent Smith and because Bliss partly resembles Weaving. The word "bane" also means "nemesis" or "deadly poison".

As he was waiting to jack out of the Matrix with a message from The Oracle, Bane was attacked by a clone of Smith, now a dangerous, viral rogue program that was bent on copying himself into everyone in the Matrix in his effort to destroy everything as well as his nemesis, Neo.

Bane's mind was overwritten by Smith. From this point on, Bane ceased to exist; when the Caduceus operator called to jack Bane out of the Matrix, Smith was the one who actually left the Matrix. Now free to roam the real world, Smith walked among the citizens of Zion using Bane's body. During his time in Zion, Bane/Smith is shown cutting himself with a knife and later approaching Neo in an attempt to stab him before he can board the Nebuchadnezzar and leave Zion. However, this murder attempt was aborted as Neo's attention was drawn in his direction by the approach of Kid, who came to see Neo on his way.

After he was unsuccessful in convincing the captain of the Caduceus to join in the Zion Council's search for the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar, Bane/Smith later sabotaged the Zion counterattack against the burrowing Machine forces by prematurely triggering the EMP on the Caduceus. This disabled many of the other hovercraft in the counterstrike, just before the Machines hit their frontline. Bane survived the attack and was later discovered unconscious by the Mjolnir.

In The Matrix Revolutions, when asked about the failure of the counterattack and his self-inflicted wounds, Bane/Smith claimed that he could not remember what happened. However, just before Neo and Trinity left for the Machine City, Bane/Smith murdered Maggie, a medical crew member of the Hammer, and stowed away on the Logos with Neo and Trinity.

Bane/Smith attacked Trinity and Neo before they could start the Logos up. During his fight with Neo, Bane/Smith used a power conduit to cauterize Neo's eyes, blinding him. However, because of his powers as The One, Neo discovered that he could 'see' the golden auras of anything or anyone that contained Machine programming. This new ability allowed Neo to see Bane/Smith while he hid in a recessed, pitch-black equipment room on the ship. Neo killed Bane/Smith by crushing his skull with a large piece of piping." BATTERIES (HUMAN):

When Morpheus explains to Neo the essentials of the matrix, he uses the visual of a battery to make clear, what humans are being used for by the machines.

In the real world, surviving humans are no longer born, but grown by the machines in huge fields, harvested and inserted into pods, which are connected to immense cores of a powerplant, which drains the biological energy humans produce to use it as a replacement of the solar energy, machines were using before the war between them and humans. Humans scorched the sky to prevent the machines from getting further energy and instead, machines are using humans now, combined with a form of fusion, as we are being told by Morpheus in the first movie.

This abuse of humans lead to the despective denomination of "coppertop", unplugged rebels are using for those humans that are still being plugged to the matrix.

BLUE PILL:

The red and blue pill are visuals used by rebels inside the matrix to make potential rebels choose between remaining plugged to the matrix or being freed. Morpheus offers Neo the choice between blue or red pill during their first encounter.

He explains that taking the blue pill will make Neo wake up in his bed without memory of the last events, believing whatever he wants, while the red pill would keep him inside the real world, unplugging him from the matrix that imprisions his mind.

Quote: "This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes" (Morpheus).

Hence, the blue pill would keep the person unaware of its actual state of being plugged to the matrix.

Cypher, the rebel and crew member of the Nebuchadnezzar, who will become a traitor, once utters to Neo: "I know what you're thinking, 'cause right now I'm thinking the same thing. Actually, I've been thinking it ever since I got here. Why, oh why didn't I take the blue pill?

BOBBIE:

Operator of the rebel hovercraft "Osiris"

In the Animatrix film "Final Flight of the Osiris", this ship discovers the Machine army digging down towards Zion. After they are attacked by Sentinels the crewmember Jue enters the Matrix to send a desperate message using an emergency broadcast drop.

"This is Thadeus, captain of the Osiris. It is 18:03 on 12-14, and I fear this will be our last transmission. Less than two hours ago we were pinned between two search units near BZ 2-18. We tried to outrun them on the surface when our sensors went completely berserk. We didn't believe what our equipment was telling us until we ran smack into the middle of it. An army. Their army. It's massive, hundreds of times the size of anything we've fought. We are under heavy pursuit and have sustained critical damage. We are going to attempt an emergency broadcast drop in the Matrix. After that, all we can do is hope that somehow this disk reaches Zion, and if it does, that it is not too late".

Just after Jue has dropped this message, the ship is destroyed by Sentinels. Its message, however, is retrieved by the Logos with an emergency operation by Captain Niobe and Second Mate Ghost in Enter the Matrix, and Zion is warned of the army." (Wikipedia)

BULLETS:

bullets within the programmed reality of the matrix obey to the laws of their programming and thus to certain physical rules.

Neo as the anomaly who can control certain aspects of the matrix, learns to first dodge and later to stop and control bullets as he sees fit. In the first movie we see Neo dodging the bullets of Agent Jones on the rooftop of the government building by moving like an agent. At the end of the first movie he dies first at hand of Agent Smith' shots, and we watch him rebirthing with new and enhamced powers, now stopping Smith' bullets.

BULLET TIME:

"(often hyphenated as bullet-time) is a concept introduced in recent films and computer games whereby the passage of time is displayed as extremely slow or frozen moments in order to allow a viewer to observe imperceptibly fast events (such as flying bullets). It is often used to create a dramatic effect, as in the film The Matrix.

The concept also implies that only a "virtual camera," often illustrated within the confines of a computer-generated environment such as a game or virtual reality, would be capable of "filming" bullet-time types of moments. Technical and historical variations of this effect have been referred to as time slicing, view morphing, flo mo, temps mort and virtual cinematography." (Wikipedia)

In The Matrix, the camera path was pre-designed using computer-generated visualizations as a guide. Cameras were arranged on a track and aligned through a laser targeting system, forming a complex curve through space. The cameras were then triggered at extremely close intervals, so the action continued to unfold, in extreme slow-motion, while the viewpoint moved. Additionally, the individual frames were scanned for computer processing. Using sophisticated interpolation software, extra frames could be inserted to slow down the action further and improve the fluidity of the movement (especially the frame rate of the images); frames could also be dropped to speed up the action. This approach provides greater flexibility than a purely photographic one. The same effect can also be produced using pure CGI, motion capture and universal capture.

BRAHMA:

The captain of the Brahma, Kali, was seen at the captain's meeting in The Matrix Reloaded, but the ship was never mentioned during Reloaded or Revolutions. It was part of Commander Lock's defense fleet and in the MMORPG The Matrix Online it is mentioned that the Brahma was destroyed so utterly in the sentinel attack that nothing salvagable or identifiable remained.

It was named after Brahma, a Hindu god who is the creator in the Hindu trinity, Trimurti. The captain gets her name from a Hindu goddess Kali.

BREW:

Dozer, one of the crew members of the Nebuchad-nezzar, is making an alcoholic beverage, which the crew calls Dozer's Brew. We see Cypher offering some of it to Neo, who disturbs him in his preparations of the treason and his meeting with Agent Smith. When Neo tries it, Cypher utters: "Good shit, uh?! Dozer makes it. It's good for two things: degreesing engines and killing braincells".

BINARY:

Binary is a crew-member of the hovercraft "Vigilant", under Captain Soren.

As Soren and his team make their way to the control room, in the real world, a group of sentinels has located the Vigilant. The sentinels fire a tow bomb at the ship, and as Axel and Jax rush to take action, a walkway collapses killing them. The bomb hits the ship and explodes, killing all on board. Inside the Matrix, Soren and his crew collapse as their real world bodies die." (Wikipedia)

AGENT BROWN:

Agents Jones and Brown are credited as Agent Smith's "sidekicks" in the first Matrix movie. Smith appears to be the leader of their Agent unit. He is seen giving them orders (such as "Find them and destroy them!") which they obey.

In The Matrix Agent Brown is played by Paul Goddard, while Agent Jones is played by Robert Taylor II.

There is little character development for either Jones or Brown in the movies, and they don't take part in the sequels. They are mostly silent but brutal accomplices to Smith. A draft of The Matrix Reloaded's script originally included Brown and Jones.[citation needed]

Brown's memorable scenes include chasing Trinity across the rooftops in the opening sequence. He attempts to shoot her but misses several times. Brown is also present in the scene where Morpheus is interrogated, injecting a truth serum into Morpheus's neck. Brown is ordered by Smith to check Neo for life signs after Smith has shot Neo: Brown pronounces Neo dead. He is last seen fleeing from Neo along with Jones after Smith's destruction.

Jones is less prominent than Brown in the first movie. His "finest moment" is when he shoots and almost succeeds in killing Neo. He stands above the stricken Neo, uttering the line "Only human," before being shot himself by Trinity. From this it seems Jones holds humanity in the same contempt as Smith. Jones is seen holding Brown back when Neo is about to destroy Smith in the end of the film, and he is last seen running away from Neo, along with Brown.

In the movie, Jones and Brown seem to exist only as thuggish assistants to Smith, for instance holding Neo down so Smith can insert a probe through his navel.

Brown and Jones continue their operation as Agents, and are seen occasionally in The Matrix Online. (Wikipedia)
